A building whose construction began in 1100 and was the long time residence of the bishops of Trento, the Castello del Buonconsiglio still holds an irresistible fascination, a building which has long represented the heart of the city.
It is the largest monumental building in Trentino, composed of constructions from different epochs to add to the fascination and mystery, all within an imposing boundary wall and in a raised position looking over the city: Castelvecchio is the oldest core, dominated by a cylindrical tower, the Magno Palazzo reflecting the characteristics of a renaissance structure, the Giunta Albertiana is a distinct example of baroque architecture, and the Torre Aquila at the southern end of the building conserves the renowned Cycle of the Months, a captivating pictorial cycle depicting the secular life of the late Medieval.
The internal decorative display of Castello del Buonconsiglio is stupendous, full of notable frescoes, works by artists such as Parmigianino and Dossi, and currently hosts the Provincial Art Museum and the Museo del Risorgimento (Museum of the Italian Unification) which have played host to important pictorial and sculpture exhibitions. Inside the castle visitors can examine the highly esteemed stuccoes, cellars, gardens, walks and ceilings.
Castello del Buonconsiglio is the main attraction in a system comprised of four beautiful castles: Thun Castle in Valle di Non, Stenico Castle in the Giudicarie Valley, and Beseno Castle in the Adige Valley.
